Configurable, Not Custom: Aligning the BOM with the Factory Floor
How Q-PAC Standardizes HVAC Fan Production with a Manufacturing Mindset
At Q-PAC, our strength lies in manufacturing. Every HVAC fan system we produce is built through a consistent, repeatable process that reflects the real-world manufacturing flow happening at our factory. While our processes allow for flexibility to meet customer needs, the foundation remains the same standard product built from a manufacturing Bill of Materials (BOM).
Built-to-Order HVAC Fans: From Engineering BOM to Manufacturing BOM
In the early stages of Q-PAC’s development, our products were driven by an Engineering Bill of Materials. While accurate, this style of BOM reflected our engineering selections and design process rather than our manufacturing flow. As Q-PAC evolved to develop a standard product line, this model became cumbersome. We acted on the opportunity and shifted to a Manufacturing Bill of Materials structured around how our products are built. This shift reflects our transition from a custom, project specific approach to a standardized HVAC manufacturing model. The manufacturing BOM defines every operation, component, and process in lockstep with how it’s performed on the factory floor to allow for a repeatable manufacturing process in developing a consistent HVAC fan product for our customers.
This shift has allowed us to expand factory capacity and throughput while giving customers confidence in delivery timelines. With predictable production flow and standardized operations, schedules are easier to plan around, reducing project delays and field coordination issues. This transformation allows us to produce repeatable, high-quality HVAC fan systems while maintaining flexibility to configure performance and options to customer requirements. Engineering now focuses on continuous improvement and refinement of the standard product’s manufacturing and lead times, not on redesigning it for each order.
Standardization That Delivers
Standardization shortens the curve. It reduces errors, improves throughput, and keeps production consistent across every system. Defined, repeatable processes make it possible to train new employees efficiently while cross-training existing employees for resiliency and minimize cost by utilizing common components when possible. For our customers, this means consistent quality, predictable lead times, and systems that install and start up the same way every time.
Configurable Products. Standard Manufacturing.
At its core, Q-PAC operates as a standard product manufacturer. We deliver variety through configuration, not customization. By aligning product design with a standardized manufacturing BOM, we connect engineering intent directly to production reality.
